How Does the LenSx System Work?
The LenSx laser system was the first femtosecond laser to be approved by the FDA for use in cataract surgery. The laser improves virtually every aspect of cataract surgery, from the planning phase to the placement of the premium IOL.
Prior to surgery, Dr. Chen uses the optical coherence tomography platform that is integrated into the LenSx system to create highly detailed images of each eye so that incisions can be placed with unrivaled precision. Incisions are then made using the femtosecond laser, guided by the measurements provided by the optical coherence tomography map. Even the most precise blade in the surest of surgical hands cannot match the precision of the LenSx laser guided via sophisticated computer software by a finely detailed map of the eye. The LenSx laser is also used to soften the cataract prior to its emulsification and subsequent removal.
After the cataract-affected natural lens has been safely removed, it is replaced with a premium multifocal IOL, which helps to restore vision at all distances. Many of our patients emerge from cataract surgery with clearer, sharper vision than theyve had in years, if not decades. Some are even able to discard their glasses or contact lenses altogether after surgery. The likelihood of this only increases with the use of the LenSx system, due to the precision afforded at each stage of surgery.
Those patients who continue to experience some residual refractive error after cataract surgery may be good candidates for fine tuning of their vision through LASIK. For suitable candidates, LASIK provides the perfect finishing touch to cataract surgery and is an excellent way to complement premium IOLs.
