Vision in High Definition with Free-form Custom Glasses Lenses

92493136-xsWhat if achieving 20/20 vision simply isn’t good enough? With traditional progressive lenses, a patient can easily achieve 20/20 vision, but still experience glare, blurring, starburst effects, ghost images, or halos. Traditional progressive lenses are not designed for the unique needs of the individual patient, but instead designed to fit a few average prescription powers. As a result of this, many wearers of traditional progressive lenses experience issues with clarity, vibrancy, and glare. All of these issues, among others, can be addressed with free-form custom glasses lenses.

At the laser eye surgery center of Dr. Paul H. Chen, North County Laser Eye Associates, we understand that LASIK and other forms of surgical vision correction are not right for everyone. Some people are perfectly happy to wear glasses, but also want to have the sharpest, clearest vision possible. Free-form custom glasses, also known as digital high-definition, or HD, lenses, offers such people the opportunity to see the world with exceptional clarity through glasses tailored to their unique eyes.

At our laser vision correction center in Carlsbad, custom glasses represent the next generation in corrective lens technology. To learn more about these revolutionary specs, please contact North County Laser Eye Associates today.

How Free-form Custom Glasses Work

Visual errors can be divided into two basic types: lower-order aberrations and higher-order aberrations. Lower-order aberrations are the universal visual errors that glasses and contact lenses have been able to correct since their inception: nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Higher-order aberrations, however, are highly individual in nature: minute flaws in the shape of the cornea that are absolutely unique to the individual eye and have traditionally been beyond the measurement of optometric technology.

Thankfully, technology has advanced to the point that these higher-order aberrations can now be accurately measured and mapped out. While this technology has been widely publicized for the improvements it has brought to LASIK and PRK, it has also led to the development of eyeglass lenses that can be truly customized to an individual’s unique eyes. Using precise measurements of the eye, a computer guides the creation of the lenses, tooling them with remarkable accuracy and taking into account not only the individual’s unique corneal imperfections but also how the individual’s eyes are positioned behind the eyeglass frames.

The result is a pair of eyeglasses that delivers true high-definition vision in a variety of circumstances. This is particularly advantageous to people who have difficulty seeing through their glasses at nighttime due to glare and other undesirable effects on vision. These effects are generally the result of higher-order aberrations. By accounting for these higher-order aberrations in the customization of the lenses, wearers experience crisp, clear, virtually flawless vision, even at night.
