How Free-form Custom Glasses Work

Visual errors can be divided into two basic types: lower-order aberrations and higher-order aberrations. Lower-order aberrations are the universal visual errors that glasses and contact lenses have been able to correct since their inception: nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Higher-order aberrations, however, are highly individual in nature: minute flaws in the shape of the cornea that are absolutely unique to the individual eye and have traditionally been beyond the measurement of optometric technology.

Thankfully, technology has advanced to the point that these higher-order aberrations can now be accurately measured and mapped out. While this technology has been widely publicized for the improvements it has brought to LASIK and PRK, it has also led to the development of eyeglass lenses that can be truly customized to an individual’s unique eyes.
