San Diego cataract surgery

Cataracts are extremely common, and almost everyone will eventually develop them over the course of life. A cataract occurs because of changes in the lens of the eye. Located just behind the pupil, this clear structure acts to focus light onto the retina at the back of the eye, so that objects can be seen clearly. A cataract occurs when the lens becomes cloudy, blocking the passage of light.

Fortunately, we don’t have to simply accept the loss of vision that cataracts cause. Eye surgeons can remove the damaged lens and replace it with an artificial one, restoring a person’s sight. Developments in technology have made this process quicker and easier than ever.

Here in our office, our surgeons continually keep up to date with the latest technology, so that we can offer the best to our patients. We’re very excited about the Lensar laser system. This is a revolutionary device that we can use to offer laser cataract surgery to our patients. We’ve been offering laser vision correction in our office for years, and now we’re able to offer laser cataract surgery as well.

What is laser cataract surgery?

Lasers can be used in several different aspects of cataract surgery. In order to do cataract surgery, the surgeon must first create an incision in the cornea, which is the curved clear structure on the outside of the eye. Using a laser allows the surgeon to make this incision very precisely. Using augmented reality technology, the system allows the surgeon to choose the best location for making this incision.

In order to remove the old cloudy lens, it must be broken up into smaller pieces, which can then be removed from the eye via suction. In the past, this has been accomplished through other means, such as phacoemulsification (phaco), which uses sound waves to break up the damaged lens. However, with the new system, the old lens can be broken up using the laser.

Once the old lens has been removed, then a new artificial lens is placed into the eye. This is called an intraocular lens, or IOL. The choice of IOL can have a significant impact on the patient’s vision after the surgery. We offer a range of deluxe IOLs here in our office, to meet the needs of a range of different people. We’ll be happy to talk you through how to choose which one is right for you.
