Rigid vs. soft contact lenses

Rigid vs. soft contact lenses

People with vision problems have a variety of options for achieving clear vision. Many choose a laser vision correction procedure, to get better vision without needing corrective lenses. However, there are some people who prefer not to undergo this procedure. They may choose glasses or contacts instead.

Contact lenses allow you to move through the world unencumbered by glasses. There are a few different types of contact lenses, including rigid gas permeable (RGP) and soft contact lenses, each with its own benefits. There’s also a hybrid contact lens called SynergEyes, which combines many of the benefits of both types.

Soft contact lenses are more comfortable

In general, soft contact lenses are the most comfortable type to wear. Most people get used to wearing soft contacts within just a few days. Oxygen is able to pass through the lens to the cornea, which helps to maintain your eye health.

Soft contacts tend to stay in place, and won’t fall out as easily during activities like sports. However, soft contact lenses are not as durable as other types. There are disposable options, which are replaced every day. Soft contacts intended for longer-term use will generally need to be replaced more often than rigid contacts.

Rigid contact lenses provide better vision

Rigid contact lenses are made of a harder plastic. Older versions did not allow oxygen to pass through, which caused eye problems in many wearers. As a result, modern rigid contacts are designed to allow oxygen to pass through the material, which is why they’re called rigid gas permeable, or RGP, lenses.

It takes a little longer to get used to wearing rigid contacts, although most people are no longer bothered by them within a few weeks. Rigid contacts are also able to provide sharper vision, particularly for those with certain types of vision problems. They also last longer than soft contacts. However, they can sometimes become dislodged during activities like sports, and they might break if they fall to the ground.

SynergEyes is a hybrid contact lens

For those who would like to combine the benefits of both, hybrid contact lenses may be an option. SynergEyes lenses are made of rigid plastic in the center, and soft plastic around the edges. The center section provides the crystal-clear vision that rigid contacts offer, while the softer edges make the lenses more comfortable to wear.
